ELA
Reading
We will be using a variety of texts throughout the year, including trade books, chapter books, and the Wonders Literature Anthology. We will work on a variety of reading comprehension skills including:
-Key Details (who, what, where, when, why, how)
-Analyzing Folktales and Fables to Determine a Moral
-Sequencing and Story Structure (Beginning, Middle and End)
-Comparing and Contrasting Texts
-Main Idea/Topic and Supporting Details
-Text Features (Fiction and Non-Fiction).
Literacy Groups
Students will work in small groups based on their reading level to strengthen foundational skills and learn new strategies to improve fluency and enhance comprehension skills. Students will work independently during Small Group Instruction time in ELA center based activities.
Spelling
We will be using a phonics based spelling program. We will focus on carefully sequenced skills that include print knowledge, alphabet awareness, phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary, fluency, and spelling. There will be a rule based spelling list. The list will go home every Monday, and a spelling test will be given at the end of the week. Spelling patterns will focus on:
-Short and long vowels
-Vowel teams
-Prefixes and suffixes
-Compound words
-Consonant blends
-Digraphs and blends.
Grammar
We will focus on identifying and appropriately and accurately using grammar when writing and speaking. This will include:
-Forming and using plural and frequently occurring irregular nouns (feet, children) and past tense irregular verbs (sat, hid, told)
-Using adjectives and adverbs, punctuation, apostrophes for contractions (don't, can't) and possessives Bill's, she's)
-Capitalizing proper nouns
-Commas for greetings and closings of letters
-Determine words using prefixes, suffixes, root words, individual words in a compound word
-Determining the difference between very similar words (skinny, scrawny)
Writer's Workshop
We will be following a Writer’s Workshop format. The students will be participating in modeled writing, shared writing, and independent writing. They will be following the writing process, which includes: brainstorming, drafting, revising and editing their work before bringing it to a final copy. We will be focusing on three types of writing:
-Opinion
Expectations: Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g.,because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.
-Informational
Expectations: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.
-Narrative
Expectations: Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.
RELIGION
Throughout the year, we will be preparing for the two Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion.

SCIENCE
The science content is based around four Next Generation science standards. We will explore the following topics:
1) Structure and Properties of Matter
-different kinds of matter exist
-matter can be solid or liquid based on temperature
-matter can be described based on its properties: size, shape, color, texture, etc.
-heating and cooling matter can cause changes that can be observed
-matter can be used for different purposed based on its properties
2) Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems
-plants need light and water to grow
-plants need animals for pollination or to help seeds spread around
-there are many different kinds of living things in any area
-many different living things exist in different places in land and water
3)Earth's Systems: Processes That Shape the Earth
-wind and water can change the shape of land
-some events happen quickly to shape the earth while others happen very slowly
-water is found in oceans, rivers, lakes, and ponds
-water can be found as a liquid or solid
-maps show where things are located and we can use maps to show different kinds of land and water
4)Engineering Design
- ask questions, make observations and gather information to solve a problem
-develop a simple sketch, drawing or physical model to help solve a problem
-analyze data from tests to solve a problem
