Congratulations on becoming second graders! I am impressed with all your hard work in the First Grade. One thing you will learn about me next year is that I love to read and we will do a lot of reading in the classroom. It is important that over the summer you read as much as you can to keep growing all the skills you’ve learned.
Now that you’re in Second Grade, you must take the time to challenge yourself and grow your reading skills even when you aren’t in school. I have a list of suggestions for you but this is also a time for you to work on picking books that are “just right” for you. A “just right” book will not be an easy read but you should be able to read most of the words on your own. I know that all of you are up to this challenge! I encourage you to keep reading with the many wonderful grown-ups in your life but I also suggest you take some time to work on reading your own. If you come across a tricky word or something you don’t understand you can always ask for help.
With this letter you will find a summer reading book list and a reading log. Please keep track of the books you read. Add any books you read this summer to the log.
Over the summer you will also need to complete two book reports. Choose one fiction book to write a book report on. Then choose one non-fiction book for the second book report. As Second Graders, I expect your best work, which means neat handwriting and full sentences (don’t forget capitals and periods.) Your summer work needs to be turned in on the first day of school.
I can’t wait to start the year with you! Happy summer!
Sincerely, Mrs. Mayo
