January 12th, 2016:
Hello Everyone,
I am sending the weekly update out early for next week because I won't be home to send it over the weekend. If something pops up like a change in routine, please send it in the form of a note for the substitute and office to have. We don't have school Monday, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. On Wednesday, January 18th the middle school will be having a bake sale during lunch. Feel free to send your kiddo in with some money. On Thursday, January 19th, St. Ambrose will have the annual Spelling Bee with first grade. We will not have a spelling list this week, so you and your kiddo have time to look over the spelling bee list if you want. You are welcome to attend the Spelling Bee, at 9 am in the Parish Center.
Here's what we have planned for next week:
E.L.A.-
We will spend a few days learning about Martin Luther King Jr. We will learn about his life and his dreams for equality for all. The kiddos will practice making inferences to interpret some of his quotes. They will also choose adjectives that describe Martin Luther King Jr. and use them to write about him. They will also talk about what dreams they have to make the world a better place and the ways they can help those dreams happen. We will continue working on verbs and identifying them in the sentences. The class will be learning about the different cursive strokes, which help set up all of the cursive letters. Finally, we will work on our informational writing about penguins.
Math-
We have reached the end on our unit making and breaking apart numbers to 1,000. The class will review Wednesday and take the test Thursday. Then we will begin our next unit on triple digit addition. I know I haven't said it in any emails in a while, so here we go: keep practicing those facts! With triple-digit addition there are so many steps and things to keep track of. It makes a huge difference in the kiddos' confidence and ability level if they have instant recall of their facts.
Religion:
The class will begin the next chapter in the book, called "We Listen to God's Word." It is all about the part of Mass called the Liturgy of the Word. This is where we listen to readings from the bible and the priest gives a homily to explain what we've listened to.
Social Studies:
We are going to start a new unit called "The World Around Us." We will be learning about ourselves on the map as well as how to read and use different types of maps.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Alissa Mayo
