WELCOME TO SECOND GRADE!
Second Grade Curriculum
Religion: The children prepare to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of the Eucharist. In preparation for Reconciliation, the children learn about making good choices. They come to understand that God is always ready to forgive them. In preparation for the Sacrament of the Eucharist, they learn about the Mass and remember that Jesus is with them when they celebrate the Eucharist. The second grade also does community service projects to recognize that helping the poor is part of Christian duty.
Reading: Skills the students work on are: decoding, comprehension,main idea/details,sequence of events, cause/effect, inferences,and predicting outcomes. They learn to follow oral and written directions. Students write in journals and create their own stories and poems. Spelling and grammar are incorporated into the weekly story selection.
Cursive writing begins in January.

Units are taught using varied materials as well as hands-on activities.
Social Studies: The students learn about their communities. They also learn about their rights and responsibilities to be good citizens.Each unit introduces the children to an important person in American history.The students are also introduced to varied map skills throughout the year.
